California

New Hampshire
Transgender people are protected by the state's Law Against Discrimination (LAD) according to a decision of a New Jersey appeals court in 2001. In Enriquez v. West Jersey Health Systems, the court held that both "sex" and "disability" protect in the law protect transgender people. The case was brought by a transsexual woman doctor who was effectively terminated after she transitioned gender. (Enriquez v. West Jersey Health Systems, 342 N.J.Super. 501)

New Jersey
New Hampshire has no anti-discrimination or hate crimes laws that protect transgender people.

New Mexico
New Mexico has a statewide transgender-inclusive anti-discrimination law that passed in 2003 (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 28-1-2(Q)).

New Mexico has a statewide transgender-inclusive hate crimes law that passed in 2003 (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 31-18B-2(B)).

New York
Transgender people are protected by the state's sex discrimination law according to a decision of a lower New York Court in 1995. (Maffei v. Kolaeton Industry, Inc., 626 N.Y.S.2d 391)
