NCTE Summer '05 Legal Intern

NCTE offers year-round internship opportunities. We welcome applications from both students and non-students. There is a small stipend available for summer interns. Fall/winter/spring internships are unpaid. NCTE will work with a student’s university to assure academic credit is received. It is best if interns are based in the DC-metro area.

NCTE interns are responsible for:

  • Creating public educational materials

  • Organizing trainings, lobby visits and town hall meetings around the country

  • Scheduling speaking engagements and trainings conducted by NCTE staff

  • Tracking local and federal legislation

  • Providing assistance to transgender activists doing lobby visits

  • Monitoring news stories on transgender issues

  • Writing membership communiqués and press materials

  • General office support (answering phones, ordering office supplies, updating database, working, compiling mailings)


Qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills

  • Experience with internet research

  • Familiarity with the transgender community and advocacy efforts

  • Commitment to progressive social justice activism

  • Ability to work independently

Internship Periods:

Summer Internship:

Internship runs June 1 – August 31. Applications due by May 1. Summer internships are 40 hours/week, Monday – Friday.

Fall Internship:

Internship period runs September 1 – December 15. Applications due by August 1. Fall internships are 15-20 hours/week, with flexible days.

Winter/Spring Internship:

Internship period runs January 1 – May 15. Applications due by December 31. Winter/spring internships are15-20 hours/week, with flexible days.

We will consider some flexibility in start and end dates for internship periods.

Specialized Internships:

Legal and Legislative Intern:

The Legal and Legislative Intern will track local and federal legislation that impacts transgender people, educate policy makers on transgender issues, and assist transgender activists in both in-district and DC lobby visits. NCTE’s Legal and Legislative Intern’s have typically been enrolled in Law School or have strong policy experience. Start and end dates for this internship are flexible.
