(Washington, DC, July 24) Representative Barney Frank, along with 118 co-sponsors, announced the introduction of a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) - which would extend the existing federal law prohibiting employment discrimination to protect people on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.  click for ENDA toolkit

NCTE is calling on its members to be very actively involved in the process of passing the bill, including visiting their members of Congress during the summer. Together, we can make this happen.

The most important thing will be to organize with others and visit your member of Congress in August. Check out our step by step information to help you make an appointment and have a positive impact with our ENDA Toolkit

Hate Crimes Bill (HR 1913/S 909)

The Senate held a hearing on the Hate Crimes Bill on Thursday, June 25. See our blog (on the right) for more info.

The United States House of Representatives voted 249 to 175 on April 29 in favor of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (H. R. 1913), moving one step closer to the passage of the first federal law to include gender identity and transgender people in a positive way.

Senator Edward Kennedy introduced the bill in the Senate, S. 909, on April 28. The bill is now before the Senate Judiciary Committe. NCTE urges you to contact your Senator and ask them to support this legislation.

This bill would add sexual orientation, gender identity, gender and disability to the categories included in existing federal hate crimes law and would allow local governments who are unable or unwilling to address hate crimes to receive assistance from the federal government.

Eliminating Health Disparities for LGBT Americans

Rep. Tammy Baldwin introduced the Ending Health Disparities for LGBT Americans Act (ELHDA), H. R. 3001, which is sponsored by Baldwin (WI) and Reps. Henry Waxman (CA), Barbara Lee (CA), Mike Honda (CA), and Nydia Velazquez (NY). This bill would comprehensively address a wide range of LGBT health issues, including the urgent need for data collection about LGBT health, research, cultural competence and other training for providers and more. NCTE provided technical assistance to the Congresswoman during her process of drafting this legislation.

This bill is not expected to be voted on as a stand alone bill, but will become part of the larger health care reform process.

You can view the full text of the bill on Thomas, the Library of Congress website that records the actions of Congress. Go to http://thomas.loc.gov and search by bill number HR 3001.
